A gas plant was a virtual Hades, with smokey coal and tar fires burning night and day. These often got out of control, prompting workers to flush parts of the system with fire suppressing chemicals. This metal sign, which hung next to a valve for sounding a steam alarm whistle, was rescued from one of the demolished gasworks buildings by Richard Haag. Its blackened, corroded appearance reminds us what a fiery, toxic business gas manufacturing really was.
